Avolasca
town hall Evocative village located in the upper part of the Grue valley with woods full of chestnuts, mushrooms and fruits from the underwood. On the highest part of the village is located the church of San Nicola, built on the foundation, still visible, of the pre-existing castle.
The origin of Avolasca dates back to the Roman Age. The first church built inside the castle from which ‘De Avolasca’ family dominated the Grue valley, dates back to a period between 972 and 978. In 1171 the village was ruled by the Lord of Gavi and Parodi, in 1429 it was subordinate to the Lords of Sant’Alosio and subsequently to the Busseti dynasty.
The main agricultural products are: wheat, maize and pasture; common are wine growing and cattle-breeding. Fruit-growing gives cherries, apricots and peaches. The surrounding woods are exploited for the trees, offering also tasty chestnuts, savoury mushrooms and delightful game, while from the numerous truffle-grounds come scented truffles, a delight for the gourmets’ palates.

- the church of San Nicola da Bari begun in 972. On the vault excellent frescoes are to be found and along the walls there is a particularly valuable 19th wooden choir.
