It is located on the hills representing a watershed from the Grue valley. Cerreto is an agricultural centre and member of the Mountain Community of the Curone, Grue and Ossona valleys.
The name Cerreto comes from the region where the village is, once covered with ‘Quercus Cerris’, that is 'Turkey Oaks'. Grue is the name of the stream flowing towards the underlying valley.
Cerreto was part of the fief of Garbagna. The present village was built around a fortified place belonging to a sixteenth century noble family.
Of the medieval fortified complex still survives a quadrangular stone structure dating from the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries and a tower (14th-15th centuries) located at the corner between Grue and Rome streets, where today it is possible to visit a small Ecomuseum.
