Agricultural centre, of Ligurian origins located on the border of the Curone and Grue valleys.
In remote times it was the crossroad between the inland routes of the Apennines and the Salt roads, which linked Genoa and the plain. .
In the period of decline of the Roman Empire the inhabitants tried to stop the Barbarian invasions by building a lookout tower. One of these towers was the first centre of the castle, which developed in the middle Ages (11th century) and was almost always under the influence of Tortona.
