The village of Piovera is located about 80 km east of Turin and about 11 km northeast of Alessandria, in a level ground, on the right bank of the Tanaro River.
The region was invaded first by the Longobardian and afterwards by the Franks. Towards the end of the 1700s Carlo Magno ordered the construction of the ‘Castrum’ of Piovera and of Rivellino (in the territory of Piovera); the town was built gradually around the fortress.

worth a visit
- the oratory of San Giovanni; rebuilt in the eighteenth century, preserving the bell tower of the 1300s.
- the castle of Piovera, whose present shape dates back to the eighteenth century, underwent many interventions. It is one of the biggest in the surrounding zone; it is a four-sided building with oval-shaped towers in the corners and two big squared off towers in the largest sides. The castle is surrounded by a deep moat and all around there are many buildings (houses, stables, stores, workplaces,…).
- of the Rivellino fortress remain some medieval parts, even though some adjoining buildings were destroyed or rebuilt over the centuries.
